Truth in poetry…

Truth in poetry…

pexels-photo-1035342.jpegI wonder sometimes if I am being honest as the words sort of come to me whole cloth.  Can I be truly honest with ideas flowing through this big coffee filter of a head ?  I suppose I have not tried to lie with poetry, that might be a challenge to embark on. How would one go about that anyway?  Something to ponder on a Friday morning (in the northeast US anyway).  So in lieu of the topic I just expounded about, here are a couple of unrelated poems from early 2018.  As usual thoughts, comments and bearer bonds are all appreciated.

untitled” 2018

are you

a winter sun

just as bright

just as distant

waking the world

warm summer to the south

a cold distance to the light

from my north

frigid dawn

for those above

and I wait

axis shift

heat under the skin” 1/2018

the skin aches for sin

grasps clamors claws

lust gnaws

rakes upon flesh

raw embers

sweat simmers

ready to mount

desire boils

blind white

fire blisters

poised to strike

Nothing witty to say but I will post a music link as I am known to do…

Toad the Wet Sprocket “Nightingale Song”

great song for driving around with the windows down.

WordPress front page is randomly funny…

pexels-photo-1002674.jpeg

OK, so this has nothing to do with the usual pulse of my blog but I felt compelled to post due to the yoke of circumstance put upon me.  Logging into the wordpress main page I was struck with the following suggestions:

“Suggestions: Hiking, Vegan, Monkeys. ”

Well.. that my friends should be a story in itself (please write your own on one of those long read posts…). Hey, have you heard the one about the vegan monkeys that were hiking?  Three vegan monkeys walked into a royal bar… one said “hi king”.   I could probably bore you with a few more (it is tempting) but perhaps I should get back to the task on hand… poetry (I had to wind up there eventually as is my charge).  So in light of the good humor (no, not the ice cream) I tried to pull one of my sillier more whimsical poems of late… maybe I will put on my serious pants later or my depressed retro glasses but for now…

untitled 2/2018” (somewhere on the garden state parkway)

Dear Sir Goose

crossing the road

with your canadian youth

your plates may say ontario

but central new jersey is your residence,

on lawns, office parks and ponds

might I pet a gosling?

might you quite disagree and peck

Sir Goose,

can I recompense

so bitter fierce to run afoul

might I need a cut-out coyote

to shield my shins

so pass on by brood in tow

‘cross the road

to brighter meadows

Musical machination of the minute: Boa “Duvet”

Of course Anime nerds should recognize this as the theme song for the quite excellent series Lain : Serial Experiments from a number of years ago… awesome tune, and one of my all time fave anime series as well.  So not only do you get a poem, you get my musical opinions… sort of like the blog equivalent of Dinner AND a Movie…

Halloween in May (poetry at least)

Halloween in May (poetry at least)

pexels-photo-1046159.jpeg

Well… since I still catching up with posting archival stuff this one is certainly an anachronism posting in May.  Hey, dress up if you like, it is the weekend.  Looks like rain outside, should be a fun commute.

untitled” 11.28.2017

we were children

dressed as devils and angels

halos and horns

marshmallows fire

on display

the duality of our plane

trained in the parade

innocence engaged

in this lurid game

of the snake and Eve

all repeat

as we evaporate

from plain site

and beloved paradise

DMK Post It: Have a swell weekend lads and lads-ies (?).  I will take a break from posting to go off into the  wilderness … or the local strip mall, the wildlife is interesting in both if not less aggressive out in the forest.

Musical Musing of the Moment (turn up da’ bass, not in a dance-y way):  Scorn – Exodus

Some quirky little numbers

Some quirky little numbers

man-person-people-emotions.jpgPoems don’t always have to be seriously deadly.. ? do they ?  Sometimes a whim of whimsical floats my sails and trails off into my pen.. and then we (well, you in this particular instance) get some of these little devils…

untitled” 11/2017

leaves! leaves ! leaves !

a flush of color

a thrush flits under

beautiful shades of the fallen

untitled” 11/2017

a cricket in the toilet

flush! flush! flush!

I must decide

live or die

hush, hush, hush

untitled” 11/2017

oh sweet leaf that falls

relief from the pressures of summer

the warmth of the coming winter

prepare to hunker

DMK Notes: “sweet leaf” in the last poem is a not so subtle reference to Black Sabbath (cool song but also makes the line a double entendre).  So, Finally a beautiful day here in northern New Jersey (traffic paradise of the northern realms, I would be a Stark if you had to ask).

If I won the lottery would I write more… or less?  Or more or less if I win the lottery would I write?

Musical Interlude of the Moment: Tycho – Human Condition

ciao francisco rinaldi! (pasta sauce jokes… the new frontier)

theme-patterns-74358.jpegI suppose there might just be such a thing. I think schools teach Haiku in that manner as if Basho is some amalgamation of simple patterns.  Not that I am writing Haiku here… just spouting off before posting some of my own work.

untitled” 4/14/2017

cracked dry vines

on a zebra patched fence

hold within the promise of spring

still firmly coated in

the dead soils of season’s past,

ready to feel the snap

of the union of fate and time

to cultivate one more climb from dust.

my sense and logic

go about upon the look

of your eyes

(so I remember)

and the wash of your smile

all these long ages – miles

my mouth has worn thin

the thought of you makes them tremble

your dream is intoxicating

like swirls of smoke dancing ’round

spiraling about me

twirling

beyond sense,

past sensibility.

I grasp for the core

of sanity

but my hand is bare

so I chance to envision

to cultivate a memory

a full bloomed petal’s velvet touch

upon my lips

the faint hope

wisp of bliss-

your lips.

DMK Note: “zebra fences” is a specific reference to a type of fence common (or at one time) common here in the US Northeast (here is a good example).  They have a very distinct look and sound… and generally rust out making them oh so fun to tangle with when you are a kid (yay tetanus!).

Musical Interlude of the moment…. Katatonia “The Racing Heart” (live, acoustic)

Has spring…finally arrived?

Has spring…finally arrived?

japanese-cherry-trees-flowers-spring-japanese-flowering-cherry-54630.jpegWinter certainly has been a worthy adversary in these parts… finally a taste of spring has whet the imagination to thaw here in New Jersey.  Here is a spring work from last year when spring arrived a bit earlier.

untitled” 3/12/2017

children running

sunshine gracing

march, the third month

degrees climbing

birds minding

nests, for eggs

lawn greening

ramps peeking

daffodils, early friends

robins prancing

territorial dancing

as dusk lingers, clocks turn

DMK Note: the last line refers to daylight savings time…because we can not handle the normal cycle of sunset/sunrise here in the US … apparently.  Just one of those weird quirks of life that is  taken for granted when it is part of your routine.  Most of the imagery above is from my yard.  I try to pay more attention these days as it seems ‘wonder’ is just as far as your eye if you just care to look.

Music of the moment…  Minus the Bear “Tame Beasts”

A Poem a Day…

A Poem a Day…

…keeps antelope-canyon-lower-canyon-arizona.jpgsomeone away I suppose.  Those who might prefer a menu to prose… Still plugging away on some 2017 material, here are three more to toss into the ether… for better or for worse, bathwater and all.

prurient” 2017

pexels-photo-326117.jpegA couple more from 2017… I will get current one of these days (soon… no, really!).   I remember writing these but I do not remember the mood I was in… even though they were on the same scrap of paper, birthed at the same time. Much like fraternal twins I suppose.

northern star” 2017

northern star

afar, how far?

a million light caress

in the palm

bathed in valleys and riverbeds

northern star

a dream, a life

a reason to be

a guiding light

northern star

brilliant death

illuminates the fall –

ascension –

now to become the star once more.

Thoughts and comments (or taunts and breath-mints) are always welcome. Email me or post under the posts, thanks!

A few quick hitters…

A few quick hitters…

embers

From 2017, a few “shorter” works… not that size matters (I’m talking poems people!)

I’m particularly partial to “find”, one of those pure things you just write in one motion and it all just ‘fits’.  Comments/Thoughts/Insults and all else appreciated.

Architect” 2017

Calvert Cliffs, MD

So I do not (generally) write too much while visiting Scientist Cliffs MD but I found an exception from some work back in 2016.  I also have some short videos on my nascent YouTube account if you want to get a feel for the area. I have a go-pro now so next time I will get better video (from my kayak). Anyway… to the words!

untitled 11/2016” scientist cliffs, md

the cliffs of calvert

stone work wrought by tireless wash

lulled by wind and waves

left to ponder and erode

exposing

grottoes caverns and tiny holes

and with time and weight

tide circulates

never ceasing march

on winter or spring

or storms lashing or calm pause

thunder to crash

dawn and gentle lapse

all in and all out

all in and all out

and then back again

never ending

undulating

rocks to sand.
