since my “rebirth” or “awakening” (or just realization to get my ass going) I am trying to look and observe to “find beauty wherever it may be“… beauty in nature, a flower, a bee hopping from one lily bloom to another, a child with their mother, a father teaching his child to ride a bike… but also in knowledge, there is beauty in knowledge learned and forgotten – even common knowledge that lies just beneath your surface eyes, like the very name of a place, how often do you think about the names of towns where you putter about in your little fishbowl of life, our turf, our own streets and yet the historical grounds of “why” in a name might escape the mundane every day, so, that is why Dobbs Ferry sang out to me and caused these words and subsequent thoughts.  So, you might be asking why Dobbs Ferry David ?  Certainly that seems like a prudent question from you.  I had work call me there this saturday, not the first time I have been and actually I have family in the town (hello Lottermans!), but it dawned on me how this little section of the Hudson is probably little known in the rest of the country (or world for that matter),  the first little tidbit that stuck in my craw was the actual name “ferry”, how soon we forget in this modern age modes of transport of the old days, but a ferry was rather important, so you had a dude named “Dobbs” who literally ran a ferry, and the the name just becomes common happenstance lost to the plowing of time across generations, but back to this area of NY, it is not very far from the city proper, but you might as well be on another world, a quaint little town on the river with stunning views, even in the colder months, just seemingly a forgotten stretch even for people who live just across the river (ahem, here in my mighty garden state).. so check out Dobbs Ferry  (there is a lot of history there – including revolutionary war stuff), I also get to visit Hastings-On-The-Hudson (the coolest looking fire department I have seen!) and Cold Spring (dutchess county wine tours people!)… and one of my favorite things up there is the Bear Mountain Bridge but I do not want to get too distracted from my original post (as I might be known to do).

If you won the lottery…

If you won the lottery…

where would you go ?  But let me limit the thoughts…  it has to be someplace you have been…

So my point…there is a ton of places I would LOVE to go to like New Zealand (hence my poems as such) and clearly tons of European destinations … and then there is my own hemisphere … sheesh… too many to name ! So… that is why I limited this exercise to places I (or you) have been.

I would go to Islamorada in Florida… it is part of the Florida Keys, this trail of islands that kind of trails off the end of Florida, it is a magical place for me.  I have driven the length of them many times along the one highway (which is such an amazing drive). Islamorada is more me than Key West… because it is sort of like a normal town (as normal as you get in the tropics/the keys).  The tourism is not the total driving thrust of the collection of islands (which is what Islamorada is) but more or less something that happens as people come on through (mostly to Key West).  I remember so fondly that the island seemed to shut down at/near sundown and people flocked to see the sunset  (and a margarita) @ Papa Joe’s (not open last time I was there, apparently it was demolished)…  it was.. something out of a book, no wonder Hemingway loved this place, I would tend to agree with him… imagine a place where you work and then everything stops.  So you could meet at the local tiki bar, on the water, up on stilts, peering out into Florida bay, watching the sun slowly fade into the clear water, sipping a cool drink in a humid heat, with a cool breeze off the water washing you over, the hot sun, sort of surrendering to the day, still burning and fierce but sinking, revealing all the colors of sunlight you do not see during the day… draining all stress from your bones, the tide, seeing the waves just rolling past the mangroves, washing over you like that last daylight.

yeah, I would go to Islamorada and maybe never return.

check out this youtube channel, pretty much what I would do down there

I watch a good deal of nature shows from all over the globe (torrenting does have it’s advantages – tangent, I highly recommend PrivateVPN for privacy, been using them for years!)… and I tend to gravitate toward the ocean (as you can see in my poems, landlubber I am not).  Tonight I started watching a series “Wild Ireland : The Edge of the World” which chronicles California.. just kidding, it features a dude (Colin Stafford-Johnson who happens to be a wildlife videographer) traveling up the Irish coast exploring all the nooks and crannies of same.  Excellent watch first off, secondly the first episode is all about the Skellig islands, more specifically Skellig Michael… it must have been a cosmic thump of total geekdom that this happens to be the island featured so prominently in the last Star Wars movie “The Last Jedi” (which I thought was good… not great, Rogue One was the best of the recent ones, but stop distracting me alright…).  So… you might recognize the island, it wasn’t fake.. no CGI, nature made this one out of the same sandstone that is the isle of Ireland (it is not a volcanic island like most we think of… at some point it was part of the larger island… quite eons ago).  The island was literally at one point the western most point in Europe (for ages.. even the middle ones).  It was actually occupied by monks for some time but now is just a tourist destination when the tides and weather permits… those cool huts from the movie are actually there.  The porgs?  Has to be the puffins that nest there…  There is tons of inspiration / material to write about (just the bird population is amazing)… I probably will, just not right now, long week of work has sapped the old well of energy but I am a fast recover-er…. so look out for some work based on this island (and the wildlife) in a galaxy not so far away…

Check out this video about the island…. (click here, and ponder, wonder)

Almost forgot some music!  check out my old friend Yogi !  he rules, great guitar player and a great guy … Yogi “The Imperial March” (Star Wars)
